Course Overview

By objectively outlining the past, current and present issues faced by Gypsies and Irish Travellers in the UK, this module aims to proactively reduce prejudice and discrimination towards this community.

It provides learners with an increased understanding of Gypsy and Irish Traveller history, identity and culture, as well as providing learners with the required knowledge to actively challenge negative social attitudes towards the Gypsy and Irish Traveller population.

On completion of this course learners will be able to:

• Identify the different terminology associated with Gypsy and Irish Traveller culture
• Outline why history, culture and family are important to Gypsies and Irish Travellers and their self-identity
• Identify how media images impact on social attitudes towards Gypsies and Irish Travellers
• Have the knowledge to challenge social attitudes
• Identify current and past examples of how Gypsy and Irish Travellers were and are treated by the government and power holders
• Describe current national and local government policy in relation to the Gypsy and Irish Traveller population
